Allan is an academic, writer and teacher. He has published widely on Australian Aboriginal Music, Japanese Music and Zen Buddhism and has held professorships at the University of Sydney, University of Hong Kong and Charles Darwin University. Now retired from academic work, he teaches at the Adelaide Zen Group.
